Martha Benavides - Instructor & Gym Manager

From an early age Martha was always drawn to a fitness driven lifestyle. Whether she was outside playing with her athletic older brothers or lifting weights with the football team in high school, it was where she found her calling. It was where she fit.

Over the years this passion for strength and fitness presented Martha with many different learning experiences. She managed a private gym in New York City which developed and advanced her personal training skills. She has also competed in the New York and LA marathons, as well as multiple Triathlon and Duathlon style events.

Forever on the quest to improve and challenge herself, Martha's ability on the gym floor pushed her to explore martial arts. The intensity and drive required for martial arts matched her personality and she has now been studying and practicing Muay Thai and Boxing for 10 years. In addition, she has proudly achieved her blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. During her exploration of martial arts she found herself with an opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches and trainers in MMA at a time when women were still forging their way into the sport. She was selected for a project to live and train alongside some of her peers many of whom are current female MMA and Muay Thai icons. This experience also provided Martha the chance to compete as a Professional Mixed Martial Artist.

Martha now shares her experience and enjoyment for sports, fitness and martial arts with her students and private clients. She has a keen eye for detail and technique and a true passion for helping others. She believes everyone possesses immeasurable strength within, the key is digging deep and finding different ways to tap into it. She places the utmost importance on this inner strength and emphasizes never listening to that little voice that tells you to stop. Her greatest pride in coaching is when she can help others find that fire, knowing that there is room for us all to succeed. Martha is kind natured but also a fierce athlete. Still gaining speed and strength in her mid-40s, she has never believed in letting common ideals define her and works tirelessly every single day smashing towards creating her own individuality, outside and in.

Sean Riley - Instructor

Always a casual runner, Sean began an interest in structured physical training during 2014 in preparation for his first marathon, joining CalCoast quickly afterwards. Bit by the racing bug, Sean continued his journey by competing in the San Francisco Marathon, multiple Obstacle Course Races, and the Malibu Triathlon. Competition turned to curiosity as he began to explore the tools and opportunities inside of the gym to enhance durability and strength for the activities outside of its doors. Through books like Uphill Athlete, Outdoor Athlete, and NonProphet training programs, Sean was able to take the knowledge from years training at CalCoast and manufacture his own programs into effective Endurance training. This study and dedication has led Sean to a top 10 finish at the Los Angeles Spartan Ultra, Sub 9 hour Nine Trails 56K trail race, 3:32 Marathon, and a PR distance of a 44 mile solo trail run.

Sean believes the activities in the gym should lead to lessons that you can take with you into all aspects of life. Mastering self talk and the negotiations in your mind are the most valuable "gains" that can be produced inside of the gym walls. Muscle performance will come and go, but it is a hardened and strong mind that will propel one not just through the workout, but also through everyday life.

"What is a greater show of strength? Moving a heavy weight with ease, or moving a light weight with struggle and determination?"
